By now i’m sure that many people have heard about the whole Vestax going out of business thing and if the rumors are true then i would not be surprised. Now don’t get me wrong, i love Vestax just as much as any other DJ but let’s be honest here, they have not put out anything really worth mentioning in a very long time.

Sure the VCI controllers were kinda cool but they never really took off. for some reason i personally could not take them too seriously, they just seem more like a toy to me and not a professional piece of audio equipment.

During the golden era of DJing or should i say the good ol days Vestax put out some really dope mixers that became the standard for a lot of guys. My personal favorite Vestax mixers are the PMC-05 and the 06. Even today i still own a golden 06 that sits nicely on top of my shelf with the rest of my mixer collection.

So after the success of producing a handful popular mixers where exactly did Vestax go wrong? well, that is yet to be officially answered but i have my theory.

If you ask me Vestax never really learned how to adapt to the ever changing DJ market. What i mean by that is they continued to put out mixers with and adding new functions such as midi mappable controls and such but they always seemed to be a few steps behind their competition over at Rane, Pioneer and even Native Instruments. Also somewhere along the line Vestax stopped caring about real DJ’s and the gear they desired. If you were ever fortunate enough to attend NAMM within the past few years just think back to the Vestax booth and their demo’s…….yeah, they were pretty bad. In other words, we don’t want cheap toys we want dope Turntables and sick mixers damnit!!

In the past Vestax has done some pretty awesome things, one can even say that they have helped pioneer the Skratch community. Way back when Vestax was a heavy hitter in the game as they were known to support major events, battles and some legendary DJ’s as well, let us not forget about the QFO and the almighty PDX.

As of right now nobody really knows the fate of the legendary company until they release an official statement but i for one hope they stay in the game and also learn how to become more of an competitive player at the same time.

The first time i seen the leaked photos of the S8 my first reaction was to hate on it. Yeah, i know that’s a shitty thing to do especially without knowing a single damn thing about the controller but something about replacing jog wheels with more buttons and pads just didn’t sit right with me.

Finally after reading DJ Tech Tools exclusive first look at the S8 i started to understand why Native Instruments decided to do away with the jog wheels and pursue other avenues.

At first glance the S8 looks like a blending of NI’s best midi controllers and functions all melted together to create one massive device, pretty simple huh? with further research i learned that the S8 is that but yet so much more. I’m talking about two LED screens, remix deck control, touch sensitive strips, professional audio outs, routable EFX and new functions such as Freeze and so on……oh yeah, let’s not forget about the new magnetic faders!

So far everything sounds pretty dope right?!?! Wait, but what about the controller not featuring jog wheels, i mean how am i going to skratch and juggle?! Well, lets think about what i just said. if you ask me the phrase “jog wheels”does not sound like something that is ment to be used for skratching or juggling. Actually jog wheels sounds like something that is meant to help you scoot tracks or cue music, def not for cuttin and skratching. Lucky for myself and other shredderz the S8 has Phono and line inputs so you can manipulate and skratch tracks properly via Turntables or CDJ’s……in other words, fuck your jog wheels and hook up a real deck.

After giving the S8 a real solid look i’m now convinced that it just may find it’s way into the hands of some vary talented DJ’s and even Turntablist. If your anything like me then you love to create your own sounds and remix tracks wile rockin the spot. The S8 just might have everything that you could ever want in assisting you reach new levels of funkyness,  just hook up a real turntable and your golden pony boy.
